At Social Sugar we have walls you can write on. We have huge floor-to-ceiling whiteboards that anyone in the office can scribble on when the mood takes them. More often than not, they’re covered in quotes.

Of course, we know that quotes are like Marmite. You might think that they’re a little too Ab Fab or David Brent for you.

However, science and psychology show that the right motivational quote can have proper power.
In fact, studies have shown that motivational quotes can make people feel the same as if they accomplished something themselves. Helpful, if you’re lacking pep one day.

Research had also found that a fifth of workers believe that having inspirational images and quotes on office walls can help stimulate creative discussion and proves crucial for brainstorming and problem solving.

One of the world’s most successful brands, Facebook, meanwhile, is a cheerleader when it comes to the power of motivational quotes. The social media company employees a team of 25 people to regularly update and reinvigorate the motivational posters and art works on the walls of its worldwide offices.

Again, at Social Sugar we don’t just graffiti any old quote on our walls. Our quotes have two qualities:

1. We try to avoid clichés. We try to go beyond the “dance like no-one’s watching” sentiments and adorn our walls with words from leaders and legends.

2. We try to only use quotes that are practical. Thanks Steve Jobs for coming up with the quote ‘innovation distinguishes a leader and a follower’, but what does that actually tell us about how to innovate? Nada.

So, with that said, here are a few of our favourite quotes from the past few weeks and why they mean something to us.

“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing;” Benjamin Franklin
This quote from the man known as The First American is the 18th century equivalent of “go hard or go home.” It never fails to light a touch paper in our agency. With all our clients we aim to do something remarkable, memorable and out of the ordinary.

“Uncertainty is where creativity lives;” Richard Branson

Comfort and creativity are not bedfellows. In addition to our whiteboard walls, we have an ideas room at Social Sugar. In this space, any idea goes. Now for the science bit… concentrate! At Social Sugar, we’re all for separating divergent and convergent thinking. That means that when we get into brainstorming meetings, we aim to come up with as many ideas as possible. We then take a break and return to make some convergent decisions, evaluating this creative confetti that we’ve just some up with.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together;” anon
This quote is the original “teamwork makes the dreamwork.” Working as a team is the modus operandi at Social Sugar. Our crew is made up of people from all backgrounds and of all age ranges and when we work together our multiple minds are better than one.

There is nothing to writing, all you do is sit at a typewriter and bleed;” Ernest Hemingway
A little dramatic you might think, but this Ernest Hemingway quote sums up our passion for words. At Social Sugar words mean the world to us. They’re the tools of our trade and as essential as a plunger is to a plumber. Without them we wouldn’t be able to produce press releases, our social media strategies would be cut down to size, and our clients’ rebranded websites and online advertisements would be empty save for the images and videos.
