Social Sugar have paired up with Smart Storage (subsidiary to Kangaroo self-storage Ltd) to help Christian homeless charity Barnabus store donations after a busy Christmas period thanks to the people of Manchester. Yvonne Hope, CEO of Barnabus expresses how delighted she is with receiving “such great support especially at this point in the year.”
The collaboration came about after we approached Smart Storage to request the opportunity to have 3 free months of storage space for the charity. This will allow Barnabus to save on storage costs and focus more on helping those in need by collecting and re-distributing necessary items. These donations range from clothing, sleeping bags, personal hygiene products, blankets, living necessities and a wide range of items.
Barnabus, “bringing hope to the homeless and vulnerable” offer a lifeline to 600 homeless and vulnerable people a week in Manchester and support their physical and emotional needs to get them back into mainstream society. Speaking with Emma Greenwood of Smart Storage, “We are proud to get involved with a local charity helping homeless people across Greater Manchester.”
Lara Besbrode, Managing Director of Social Sugar reminds us that “We need to continue the momentum of support from the people of Greater Manchester” and that “homelessness is not just a Christmas issue, but it is an on-going issue across Manchester and the country.”
Currently rough sleeping across Greater Manchester continues to rise. More than 40% in just 12 months with this region experiencing a sevenfold increase since 2010 and the city centre itself experiencing a 13-fold increase since 2010, the fourth highest number in the country. Barnabus aims to curb this with multiple programs. Such as their beacon drop-in centre, providing tenancy and furnishing support, the street outreach program and their homeless charter aiming to take this issue to the politicians and representatives of Manchester council. This is just to name a few of the many projects they are working on.
